PROVISIONAL SPECIFICATION left by Henry
Manning Knight at the Office of the Commissioners of Patents on the
22nd March 1882.
HENRY MANNING KNIGHT of Wood Street in the City of London "A NEW OR
IMPROVED CHEST EXPANDING CORSET"
The object of this invention is to afford facilities for expanding the
chest and preventing and curing round shoulders and stooping by means
of a new construction of corset or combination of appliances therewith.
For this purpose I provide or form the corset at the back with two
straps which after being crossed on the back are passed over the
shoulders and then back under each arm by preference through loops
hooks or staples of leather or metal so as to prevent injury or
discomfort to the arm pits and then through loops hooks or staples
fixed at or near the middle of the back of the corset and then brought
to the front where the two straps are fastened
to buckles at or near the waist. The more they are
tightened up the more they will pull the shoulders back
Or according to another arrangement the parts passing round the
shoulders may be made as separate ring belts or loops to which straps
are attached which pass round or through loops or hooks down to the
waist at the back and then to buckles in front
The straps may be elastic or otherwise or be composed of parts elastic
and parts inelastic
Instead of straps I may use cords or other such suitable means for the
purpose.
